WEST ORANGE - The Devils' long, lockout-induced layoff finally will end this morning when they take to the ice for their opening practice of training camp at South Mountain Arena.
Left wing Patrik Elias will have to remain on dry land for a while longer, however, as he slowly progresses in his recovery from a serious bout with hepatitis A.
Elias has stepped up his off-ice exercise over the past three weeks, riding the stationary bicycle, lifting weights and running on a treadmill. He even did some in-line skating once.
He has not been cleared to start skating on the ice, though, and won't be ready for the Devils' regular-season opener on Oct. 5 against Pittsburgh.
"I knew five months ago that would be the case," Elias said Tuesday. "I'm happy with the way it's going. I feel better than I thought I probably would. It will probably be a little bit tougher when the guys get to play the games."
